Business and Transactional Law Center
Students with an interest in business and transactional law will profit from the innovative programs of the Business and Transactional Law Center. The Center encompasses a wide range of fields, including corporate, securities, tax, agribusiness, banking, entrepreneurial, commercial, oil and gas law, real estate development, and general business law.
Students learn essential transactional skills such as contract drafting, client counseling, and negotiation. They also gain a basic understanding of important allied disciplines such as accounting, finance, and economics. Students may also choose to pursue a concentrated course of study through Washburn Law's Certificate Programs (Estate Planning, Natural Resources Law, Tax Law, and Business and Transactional Law).
Real-World Insights and Experience
The Business and Transactional Law Center extends learning beyond specialized coursework by encouraging regular interaction between students and seasoned practitioners. Business lawyers mentor students, speak at student luncheons, and meet with small groups of students to discuss current issues facing the profession. Students can also get hands-on experience in transactional law through the Center's supervised externships with in-house counsel or corporate law firms.
The Center continually addresses current issues facing business and transactional lawyers by sponsoring colloquia on tax compliance, partnerships, tax shelters, and tax code, and by hosting acclaimed counsel and business practitioners who offer insight to the legislative process, pending legislative issues, and recent developments in the areas of international tax, trade, and ethical issues.
Student Society
The Washburn Business Law Society (WBLS), a student organization open to all law students, is central to the operation of the Business and Transactional Law Center. WBLS members work closely with the Center's director to design and implement various events and programs
