Legal Analysis, Research, and Writing Program

The Legal Analysis, Research, and Writing Program at Washburn Law provides a strong foundation for first-year law students.

Washburn Law has made a major commitment of resources to its Legal Analysis, Research, and Writing Program, which has consistently been ranked among the top legal writing programs in the country.

All first-year students must complete six graded hours of legal analysis, research, and writing. The class sizes are small and are taught by professors dedicated to legal writing as their chosen profession.

Washburn Law's first-year program is staffed by a permanent, full-time, fully-integrated, tenure-track faculty. Students have their written product critically evaluated to assist them in developing their writing, editing, and revising skills.

Upper-Level Writing Requirement

Each student is required to complete a rigorous writing experience prior to graduation. This advanced writing experience is conducted through supervised rewriting and individualized feedback to help students better organize content, further develop a point or thesis, recast ideas in more sophisticated language, achieve analytical flow and clarity, and furnish accurate and proper citations.

A student may meet the upper-level writing requirement by participating in a variety of writing experiences, including seminar courses, directed research, clinic, law journal, and moot court. Washburn Law also offers annual courses – Writing for Law Practice and Transactional Drafting – to satisfy the upper-level writing requirement.
