Invitation From The Dean
Please join fellow Washburn Law alumni from around the country on Monday, May 24, 2010, in Washington, D.C., for our 4th biennial special admission to the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court Swearing-In Ceremony.
The day begins early when we enter the Supreme Court as a group and are escorted to a reception room for a continental breakfast. Those being sworn in may have one guest accompany them inside the courtroom. Other guests are invited to remain in our reception room during the ceremony. As Dean of Washburn University School of Law, I will be honored to move the group for admission. Following the ceremony, we will return to our reception area for brief conversation and photos with a few of the Justices. During our event in April 2008, Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Anthony Kennedy joined us.
We welcome you, your family, and your friends to participate in this memorable experience.
Sincerely,
Thomas J. Romig
Dean and Professor of Law
Washburn University School of Law
Registration for the swearing-in is closed.
Please join us for the May 23 reception and/or May 24 celebration luncheon.
"The Washington experience exceeded my expectation for a first-class event. It is one of my life's experiences that I will remember, and it reinstilled my pride in my law school. Thank you for that."
~ The Honorable James G. Beasley, ’66
Washburn University School of Law is pleased to announce a unique opportunity for its graduates to become members of the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States in open court on May 24, 2010.
D.C. area and other Washburn University School of Law alumni and guests NOT being sworn-in are invited to attend the May 23 reception and May 24 celebration luncheon described below (RSVP by May 12 with this registration form).
Qualifications
There are two ways to gain admission to the Supreme Court:
Open Court Admission
In this admission, the applicant is presented in court on May 24, 2010, during a special session. The application and instructions for open court admission to the bar follow (see also How to Register, below).
Admittees must:
- Complete the Application for Admission to Practice.
- Have the endorsement of two sponsors who are members of the Supreme Court Bar who know the applicant personally and are not related to the applicant by blood or marriage. (Washburn Law can assist you with this requirement.)
- Obtain a Certificate of Good Standing from the presiding judge, clerk, or authorized official of the highest court of a State, Commonwealth, Territory or Possession, or of the District of Columbia evidencing the fact that the admittee has been a member of the Bar of such court for three years.
Due to the size of the courtroom, we are limited to 50 alumni, to be determined on a first-come, first-served basis. Each person being admitted to the Supreme Court may bring one guest into the Court to witness the ceremony. Additional guests could possibly be allowed in at the discretion of the Court, but this is not guaranteed.
Written Motion Admission
If you are unable to attend, you may be admitted by written motion. Graduates can file a completed application directly with the U.S. Supreme Court Clerk's Office. The certificate is mailed directly to the applicant. There is no quota on the number of graduates who can apply for admission by written motion.
