Foulston Siefkin Lecture: Donald Zillman presents, "More Than Tilting at Windmills"
Donald N. Zillman presented the Foulston Siefkin Lecture at Washburn Law on February 27, 2009. Zillman is the Edward S. Godfrey Professor of Law at University of Maine School of Law and President of the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Professor Zillman's topic was "More Than Tilting at Windmills."
He has written more than 50 scholarly articles and co-authored ten books, primarily in the fields of energy law and military law. His expertise makes him a much sought-after speaker on energy topics around the world.
The Honorable Joseph Ghartey is Visiting Distinguished Jurist in Residence
The Honorable Joseph Ghartey, former Minister of Justice and former Attorney General, Republic of Ghana, visited Washburn Law as a Visiting Distinguished Jurist in Residence from February 13-20, 2009. His visit was co-sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Advocacy (CEA) and the Business and Transactional Law Center (BTLC).
Ghartey spoke to students on "The Impact of Illegal Drugs, Smuggling, and the Law's Response in Ghana," "Oil, Gas and Environmental Issues in Ghana," and "Ghana Trial Lawyers: Portrait and Appraisal."
Delano Lewis is Spring 2009 Distinguished Alumni in Residence
Delano E. Lewis visited Washburn University School of Law on Thursday, January 29, 2009 as the Spring 2009 Business and Transactional Law Center Distinguished Alumni in Residence.
Delano Lewis is the former Ambassador to South Africa, former President/CEO of National Public Radio, former CEO of Bell Atlantic (now Verizon), and currently the Senior Fellow at the International Relations Institute at New Mexico State University. He is a 1963 graduate of Washburn University School of Law.
Ambassador Lewis was recognized by the Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas as the 2008 Kansan of the Year at their annual banquet on January 30, 2009.
The Rule of Law and the Global War on Terrorism Symposium
The inaugural symposium for the Center for Law and Governement was "The Rule of Law and the Global War on Terrorism: Detainees, Interrogations, and Military Commissions," held November 13-14, 2008.
This event featured nationally and internationally-renowned legal experts and practitioners. Topics included unitary executive theory, U.S. detention and interrogation policy, accountability of government legal advisors for war crimes, defending Guantanamo detainees, and strategies for addressing these issues by the incoming administration.
