Photograph: Janet Johnston.Janet R. Johnston, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Justice Studies at San Jose State University, will spend two days with Washburn Law students and faculty on March 17-18, 2011.

Dr. Johnston will present the Children and Family Law Center's Lunch and Learn Lecture on March 17. Her presentation will be "Lawyers' Use of Social Science Research."

She will speak to classes and meet with small groups of students.

Dr. Johnston will also be the keynote speaker at the Impact/Effect of Parent Alienation CLE on March 18.

Janet R. Johnston has worked with high conflict custody litigating families for three decades with special attention to domestic violence, alienation, and abduction.

In addition to research findings published in numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, Jan has coauthored several books including Impasses of Divorce and In the Name of the Child (2nd ed. 2009); a treatment manual called "A safe place to grow", and a collection of "Healing stories for children of divorce" published in 3 languages (English, Spanish, and Chinese).

Her articles have been among the most influential on parental alienation. In 2001 Dr. Johnston and Joan B. Kelly, Ph. D., refocussed the entire area in "The Alienated Child: A Reformulation of Parental Alienation Syndrome," 39 Family Court Review 249 (2001). She has written about identifying alienation (as opposed to role reversal, child abuse, etc), the psychological functioning of alienated children in custody disputing families, and treating couples.
