Reference

The Reference Collection on the second floor contains legal and non-legal directories, dictionaries, specialized encyclopedias, bibliographies, and compendia used for reference assistance. These reference materials do not circulate. The ready reference collection behind the Reference Desk contains frequently used reference books kept at hand for immediate availability.

An extensive list of electronic resources is provided for law faculty and students. Included are WashLaw, Westlaw, Lexis, Kansas Supreme and Appeals Court opinions, FirstSearch databases, the Index to Legal Periodicals, CD-ROM databases, and Internet access. Many of these resources are available to the public. The Reference area contains several computers that can be used to access these electronic resources.

The reference area also contains a computer dedicated to providing access to Lexis' Shepard's Online to the public. Another computer is dedicated to providing West's KeyCite Services to the public. Both of these services let patrons updated case citations. The cost of printing from these computers is 10 cents per page.

Small reference collections on third and fourth floors contain the basic Kansas legal resources (Kansas Statutes Annotated, Kansas Reports, etc.), the United States Code, a legal encyclopedia, and dictionaries. The fourth floor reference area has a set of the United States Reports and Shepard's Kansas Citations so researchers do not have to go to the third floor.
