The Head of Reference/Government Documents and Electronic Services Librarian is the professional primarily responsible for the documents collections, DocLawWeb, and other electronic resource services of the Law Library.

Additionally, all Law Library reference activities are coordinated by this person. This includes reference scheduling, designing handouts, related public affairs activities as well as reference collection maintenance. All actions are reviewed on a continuous basis by the Associate Director.

Reference Duties:

  1. Prepares and coordinates the Law Library reference shifts as well as new student orientation, research assistant training, and legal writing and research library support.
  2. Approves work schedules.
  3. Provides bibliographic instruction in Law School courses, to faculty and staff.
  4. Provides information literacy to all patrons.
  5. Prepares research guides as necessary to faciliate access to the documents collection and DocLawWeb.
  6. Initiates and supervises listserv services.

Government Document Duties:

  1. Supervises one full-time Government Documents/Microforms Assistant and part-time student assistants.
  2. Supervises the maintenance of comprehensive on-line shelf lists for federal and state depository documents.
  3. Provides legal research direction and instruction to students, law faculty, members of the bar, and the general public. Specialty assignments in Copyright, Patents, and Trademarks.
  4. Correlates the Law Library and Mabee Library federal depository collections, including selecting, deleting, and maintaining a comprehensive shelf-list and item file.
  5. Provides access to government documents by cataloging and inputting MARC records into the online catalog on a weekly basis. Checks holdings, and advises on selection of materials for state and federal depository collections. Proposes policy in this area.
  6. Maintains and develops DOCLAW, the WashLawWeb Internet gateway to U.S. government resources. Maintains a computerized record for non-depository and non-cataloged microforms and maintains a current title and location list of these microforms in hardcopy at the bibliographic center.
  7. Oversees the cleaning and maintenance of the microforms, microfiche/film readers, microfiche scanner and reader-printer (change toner, clean lens and carriers, etc.).
  8. Oversees the maintenance of the Wolf Creek Collection as specified in the NRC contract and supplies reference assistance as needed. Prepares quarterly reports as required by the NRC contract.
  9. Maintains the law school compact disk network. Oversees the numerous menu systems to carry out this activity.

Public Affairs Duties:

  1. Provides and coordinates tours of library.
  2. Markets library to law school and university.
  3. Provides training for orientation of library resources and services.
  4. Active in University affairs and gets involved with policy.
  5. Available to student organizations for various forms of assistance.
  6. Completes special public service projects.
  7. Writes small research grants.

Instructional/ Faculty Services Duties:

  1. Helps train faculty, students, and staff on CD-Roms, Netscape, listservs, web navigation, Lexis and Westlaw.
  2. Acts as a faculty liaison member with a select group of law faculty.
  3. Coordinates various activities with LRW faculty.
  4. Teaches individual law school classes on specialized subjects.
  5. Trains research assistants.
  6. Monitors various news sources and relays information to interested faculty.
  7. Coordinates technology tutorials and legal research tutorials.
  8. Creates and produces video tutorials.

Professional Development:

  1. Participates on committees.
  2. Contributes to regional newsletters.
  3. Serves as officer in national and regional library associations.
  4. Writes professional quality publications.
  5. Speaks and gives presentations in national and regional conventions.

Performs other tasks as assigned by the Associate Director.
