On April 2-3, 1998, Washburn Law School, the University of Kansas Law School, the Office of Disciplinary Administrator and the Kansas Bar Foundation jointly sponsored a two-day conference entitled "Professionalism in the Law: From Territorial Days to the Millenium." The first day was at Washburn and the second was at K.U. Participants included law students, practitioners, judges and high school students.
The conference theme was transforming the profession for the future. Featured speakers included Washburn Professor Sheila Reynolds, who discussed "Transforming Ethics Rules for the Multijurisdictional Law Practice." Also addressing the conference were Professor Peter Martin of Cornell Law School on "The Impact of Technology," Professor Camilla Watson of the University of Georgia Law School on "The Tax Lawyer's Duty to the System", and Professor Ronald Rotunda of the University of Illinois College of Law who surveyed "Issues in Attorney Ethics."
There were separate panel presentations on judicial ethics and the future of the legal profession, a keynote address by Judge Deanell Reese Tacha of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, presentation of awards for a state-wide high school writing competition on the topic "Professionalism" and the first public exhibition of a major photographic history entitled "The Face of the Law in Kansas."
