Washburn University School of Law held its 96th Commencement on May 12, 2001 at the Topeka Performing Arts Center to recognize the Class of 2001. The Juris Doctor (J.D.) was conferred upon more than 140 students during the ceremony. The J.D. is the first earned law degree indicating graduation from a law school with three years of post-baccalaureate study.
Robert E. Hirshon, President-elect of the American Bar Association, gave the commencement address. Hirshon advised graduates to move beyond books and briefs during their legal career. They should make time in their legal practice to practice their life. Do things outside the law for personal enjoyment. Hirshon stressed the importance of making time for family and to learn from mom and dad. Actively engage the legal profession by trying a stint in public service and participating in the organized bar. Hirshon also advised the graduates to give time to pro bono service to assist those in need.
An honorary Doctor of Laws degree was awarded to Mark V. Heitz in conjuntion with the graduation exercises. Currently the President and CEO of AmVestors Financial Corporation, Heitz received his bachelor's degree from Washburn University and graduated from Washburn Law School in 1977. Mr. Heitz and his wife have endowed a fund for the study of insurance law and contributed to the funding of Washburn's athletic programs and the faculty reading room in the law school library. Heitz also has served on the university's board of regents and the law school's board of governors and is currently a trustee of the endowment association. Mr. Heitz said he was "extremely surprised and extremely proud" of being named to receive an honorary doctor of law degree.
