Students Learn About CASA

Photograph: Linda Pease. The Children and Family Law Center hosted a presentation by Linda Pease and Joanna Penn, former and current Resource Development Directors for Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) on Wednesday, September 15, 2004. Ms. Pease discussed the history of the CASA program, as well as the role of a CASA, what it takes to be a CASA, and what those interested in being a CASA should do.

A CASA monitors court orders, while building a trusting relationship with the children under their care. In order to become a CASA, one must go through an extensive training program. Then, a supervisor and a case are assigned. Courtroom supervision is an additional requirement of becoming a CASA volunteer. In order to become a CASA, a completed application must be returned, among additional requirements.

The presentation gave students an introduction on the opportunities available to those interested in children's issues.
