Sue Jean White Visits With Students
The Washburn Business Law Society hosted a breakfast with Sue Jean White, Class of 1980, on Friday, October 29, 2004. White is associate general counsel for Shell Oil Co. and manager of the corporate secretary's office, which maintains the corporation's books and records.
At the breakfast, White discussed the manner in which Shell controls the cost of hiring outside firms to perform work for the corporation. She said outside bills are scrutinized heavily to ensure that actual value was received for the hours billed. Shell also required firms to report the number of hours billed by minorities and women to make sure those groups are represented.
In addition, Shell created an internal legal database to make sure that the corporation does not pay someone to do research that has already been done in the past.
White, who received both her undergraduate and juris doctorate at Washburn, was honored as an Alumni Fellow at a luncheon later that day. At the luncheon, she recalled her homesickness during her first year at Washburn as an undergraduate.
White also spoke to the Oil and Gas class in the afternoon about her experiences buying and selling oil and gas properties.
