Buddenbohm Speaks About Municipal Law
Leonard Buddenbohm, Class of 1976, spoke to Washburn Law students on Thursday, November 11, 2004 about his experiences as county counselor in Atchison, Kansas.
Buddenbohm said that when he became county counselor in Atchison most counties did not have such a position. Today, the County Counselors Association of Kansas supports lawyers in these positions. Buddenbohm is a former president of the organization.
Buddenbohm works part time as the Atchison county counselor. He attends county commission meetings and advises county officials on legal issues. While the county attorney handles criminal matters, as counselor Buddenbohm handles the civil work. As an example of issues he deals with, Buddenbohm showed students a trial brief for a case about the licensing of an adult entertainment establishment.
Buddenbohm said the complexity of modern law is one of the reasons that the area of municipal law is growing. Elected officials need a lawyer to properly advise them.
Buddenbohm is also the city attorney for the city of Effingham, Kansas, and he has a part time private practice.
