Alum Talks About Health Care Law
The Washburn Business Law Society hosted Jeffrey Ellis, Class of 1977, on Thursday, January 19, 2006 to speak about health care law. Mr. Ellis, of Lathrop & Gage, focused his presentation on managing hospital and physician competition.
Currently health care costs are the most rapidly rising costs associated with the GDP. Doctors and hospitals are in a symbiotic relationship. However, due to the current structure of the health care system, the doctors and hospitals end up in competition. This turmoil in the industry creates a significant business opportunity for lawyers.
Mr. Ellis described health care law, as business law within a unique regulatory complex. In health care law field, corporate law, anti-trust law, contract law, transactional law, state law, and negotiation all play a role. The lawyer's job is to find a creative solution for the client. Often, the best way to do this is to collaborate and give the client options.
