Ross Discusses Serving A Corporate Client
The Washburn Business Law Society hosted Frank J. Ross, Jr., Class of 1978, on Thursday, March 16, 2006. Mr. Ross, a partner with Polsinelli, Shalton, Welte and Suelthaus in Kansas City, presented "Serving a Corporate Client: What Does a Business Lawyer Do?"
Mr. Ross began his presentation by ensuring the audience that regardless of their background, they could become effective business lawyers. He stated that when dealing with a small-business client, it is important to understand their needs while also making sure the client understands the services being provided. Mr. Ross emphasized that the best business lawyers have rewarding relationships with their clients. In stressing this point, Mr. Ross stated clients do not hire law firms, they hire lawyers with whom they have relationships.
Mr. Ross covered a number of different issues which arise in a lawyer/small-business client relationship. While discussing client development and retention, Mr. Ross highlighted areas such as quality work, contact with clients, respect for opposing counsel and the importance of making each client's work a priority. In closing, Mr. Ross stated "being a transactional lawyer doesn't have the majesty of being in a courtroom, but you are fulfilled by becoming a part of the team of your client's business."
