Anti-Virus Programs & Suspicious E-mail
First, check out the Washburn University web site about Antiviruses here (PDF file). It includes policies and more links to anti-virus programs.
Anti-Virus Programs
- Before attempting to connect to the University's wireless network your computer must have an antivirus and it must have the lastest updates. There are many retail and free antiviruses available. Click here to get a comprehensive list.
Suspicious E-mail
- Sometimes suspicious email can be easy to identify while other times it can be difficult. When an email appears to be coming from someone you know you can't always be sure it's really from them. More and more emails are getting spoofed where they make it look like it's coming from someone you know. If you come across an email from someone you know and you want a second opinion whether it's safe to open the attachment you can do the following:
Forward the suspicious email with the attachment(s) to scan@virustotal.com changing the subject line to scan.
VirusTotal is a free service which scans your email for suspicious files and facilitates the quick detection of viruses, worms, trojans, and all kinds of malware detected by over 35 antivirus engines. It will send you back an email with a report as to whether it found anything or not and takes less than 3-5 minutes.
