How To Scan Using HP Director

There are two ways to scan using the HP Scanjet 8250 (the scanner) with HP Director (software).

First, make sure the scanner is turned on. The arch on top of the power button should be lit and green if the scanner is on.

THE EASY, FAST WAY, using the buttons on the scanner itself, which automatically brings up the scanner software. For this, follow the directions below under "The Fast, Easy Way: Starting with the Buttons on the Scanner Itself."


THE LONGER, MORE CONTROLLED WAY, using the HP Director program software. Follow the directions below under "Starting with the HP Director Program Software."

The Easy, Fast Way : Using the Buttons on the Scanner Itself

  1. This is for SCANNING TEXT DOCUMENTS, no editing needed. See A12 for scanning images. See Step 22 for scanning text to edit (OCR).
  2. Place the documents between the guides of the sheet feeder, print side up, top side, or on the flatbed, print side down, in the corner marked on the glass. For two-sided originals, the document feeder can be set to scan in both sides automatically. Just slide the lever on the top of the scanner (next to the “lift here” sign) to the forward position.
  3. Press the button pictured above.
  4. The software program will pop up.
  5. Let HP scan the document(s).
  6. If you use the document feeder, and there are more images to scan, click Yes, if not, click No on the next screen.
    If you used the document feeder, go onto step A10.
  7. If you used the flatbed glass, crop your text to the desired size. Click and drag any of the black boxes surrounding the document to the desired size. Click the big "Accept" green button at the bottom of the screen when you have finished cropping.
  8. After clicking "ACCEPT", HP will finish scanning your selection.
  9. If there are more pages click Scan, otherwise click Done.
  10. Save the file. In the Save In drop down box, choose your disk, thumb drive or "P" drive. In File name choose a name. In Save as type, choose from pdf, htm, or rtf. RTF is commonly chosen. Click on Save.
  11. The file is saved and accessible where you saved it. The application will automatically disappear. Retrieve your disk or thumb drive.
  12. SCANNING IMAGES
  13. Place the documents in between the guides, print side up, top side into the tray, or on the flatbed, print side down, in the corner marked on the glass.
  14. Press the button for scanning images.
  15. The software program will pop up.
  16. HP scans your image(s).
  17. If there are more images click Scan, if not, click Done.
  18. The Imaging Screen appears. It tends to cycle through a few clicks, then settles on some images to choose from. You may see previously entered images. Highlight and double click the image you have scanned.
  19. The Image Editor will pop up. You can crop your image from here, copy, paste, print, zoom in or out, rotate, resize, sharpen, color and save using the various options on the screen. When you are finished, choose Save As.
  20. The Save As screen appears. In the Save In drop down box, choose the location of your disk, thumb drive or "P" drive. In File name choose a name. In Save as type, choose from pdf, jpg, *.*, etc. Click Save.
  21. Your image remains on the screen as you saved it. You may work with it some more (but remember to re-save it) or Exit the program. Remember to take your disk or thumb drive with you.
  22. SCANNING TEXT TO BECOME EDIT ABLE (OCR)
  23. Place the documents in between the guides, print side up, top side into the tray, or on the flatbed, print side down, in the corner marked on the glass.
  24. Press the OCR button.
  25. The software program will pop up.
  26. If you use the document feeder proceed to step A.
  27. If you used the flatbed glass, crop your text to the desired size. The scanner is set to scan the entire bed. By using the mouse to drag the square at the bottom of the scanned document and pulling it up to where the paper ends, you will remove the blank space at the end. Click and drag any of the black boxes surrounding the document to the desired size. Click the big "Accept" green button at the bottom of the screen.
  28. HP starts scanning to Word.
  29. Choose Scan if there are more documents to scan, or Done, if not. If more pages are loaded, the scanner will automatically take each one without asking each time.
  30. HP will process the pages scanned.
  31. The page(ns) will appear in a Word document. You can edit, just as you would in your word processing program.
  32. Save the file. Choose File from the top tool bar. Choose Save As.
  33. In the Look In drop down box, choose the location of your disk, thumb drive, or "pp" drive. In File name choose a name. In Save as type, choose Word Documents(*.doc). You can also choose Word Perfect, html, and many other choices. Click Save.
  34. A. You may exit the program and retrieve your disk or thumb drive.

STARTING WITH THE HP DIRECTOR PROGRAM SOFTWARE

  1. SCANNING TEXT
  2. Place your document either in the document feeder face up, top of the page heading into the feeder; or inside on the flatbed scanner with the face down and top at the corner marked on the scanner. For two-sided originals, the document feeder can be set to scan in both sides automatically. Just slide the lever on the top of the scanner (next to the “lift here” sign) to the forward position.
  3. Double click on the desktop folder titled “Scanning.”
  4. Double click on the icon titled “HP Director.”
  5. If you were scanning a picture click on the Scan Picture.) For text documents click the Scan Document icon.
  6. When the next screen appears, click px to exit this screen.
  7. Choose your settings.
    1. Choose document, if not already chosen.
    2. Scan for text editing (OCR)? If you wish to edit your text, answer Yes. If not, choose No.
    3. Original contains graphics? If there is a picture or graphics or any kind in your document answer Yes, if not, click No. In the Scan to drop down box, choose Word, Word Perfect or another application. Click Scan.
  8. HP starts scanning.
  9. To scan more pages click Scan, if not click Done. If more pages are loaded into the scanner, it will take them one at a time.
  10. The program will start processing the document.
  11. Your document will now start scanning. If you get a screen asking if you wish to load more pages, you will need to answer scan for more or done if finished adding pages.
  12. The scanner is set to scan the whole bed and the above document was only letter size. By using the mouse to grab the square at the bottom of the scanned document and pulling it up to where the paper ends, you will remove the blank space at the end as shown below. Click Accept (the big green button in the lower right corner of the screen), and the scanner will finish scanning your document.
  13. Let the program finish scanning.
  14. Adding pages. Click Yes or No.
  15. If you used the document feeder, choose Scan or Done.
  16. HP processes the pages scanned.
  17. The document is scanned into the program you chose. You can edit the document, just as you would if you had typed it into the word processing program.
  18. Save the document. Click on File in the upper left corner and click Save As.
  19. Save the document for retrieval later.
    1. In the Save In drop down box you will choose the location of where you wish to save the file. Either "P," your thumb drive, or your disk.
    2. In the File Name drop down box, name your document.
    3. In the Save as type drop down box choose the application that you wish to save the document as. Word (doc), rtf, html, etc.
    4. Click Save.
  20. Your document is now retrievable where you saved it. Remember to take your disk or thumb drive.
