This article is for a special volume on drone-based targeted killing in armed conflict.

The article examines the legality of drone strikes; reviews the applicable legal principles from international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law (IHRL); and examines the record of civilian deaths caused by drone strikes in Afghanistan.
