Judge Elizabeth Paris Discusses Process and Practice in Front of the U.S. Tax Court

Washburn Law students had the unique pleasure to hear from United States Tax Court Judge Elizabeth Crewson Paris about how the Tax Court works and her path to the bench during an April 20, 2017 lunch and learn presentation. Judge Paris recommended that students do two things to improve their careers:

  • First, appreciate and take advantage of the experienced members of the bar because they were practicing when the tax code was written and have an enormous amount of knowledge and talent.
  • Second, volunteer with the bar association and give back to the community.

Volunteer activities are great experience and can make a difference in the law, and they often help an attorney advance professionally.

Judge Paris also gave a cursory explanation of the U.S. Tax Court. There are many factors to consider when deciding where to bring a tax case, and practitioners must actively consider what is best for the client.
