Commencement Celebration for 2020 AND 2021 Graduates

Washburn Law is excited to honor its 2020 AND 2021 graduates during a single special Commencement Celebration on Saturday, May 15, 2021, beginning at 2:00 p.m. (procession leaves Law School at 1:30 p.m.).

Each class will be recognized separately during Commencement.
(See tentative Order of Exercises, below.)

This Commencement is for May, June, and August 2020 graduates (Class of 2020) AND December 2020 + May, June, and August 2021 graduates (Class of 2021).

Steps for a Successful MAY Graduation

Step 1: BEFORE April 15, 2021: Complete the 2020 or 2021 Graduate Information Questionnaire AND Register Your Guests

Tickets are required.

  • Each graduate may have up to 6 guests attend the commencement ceremony.
  • Children under two do not need to be registered and will not count as one of your six guests.
  • Pre-registration, masks, and distancing will be required of all graduates and their guests.
  • Information about ticket distribution for May and December 2020 graduate guests will be provided at at later date.
  • Tickets for 2021 graduate guests will be distributed at Friday, May 14 mandatory practice.

Step 2: Regalia -- Purchase from the Ichabod Shop

  • Regalia must be purchased to participate in commencement.
  • Purchase regalia before April 15.
  • The price is $99.
  • Purchase online at or in-person at the Ichabod Shop (i.e., Washburn bookstore).
  • Regalia, except the hood, can be returned for a refund ONLY if unopened. We recommend not opening the package until a week before the ceremony and you know you will be able to attend.
  • Once opened, hang the regalia to relax the wrinkles.

Step 3: Order Graduation Announcements (optional)

  • Order online at Select "Kansas," then "Washburn University Law," then "May" under "Start Your Order."
Step 4: BEFORE MAY 14, 2021 - Pre-Register for Grad Images Photos (Optional)
  • Individual photos will be taken of each graduate as hooding occurs, as congratulations are extended by Dean Pratt, and in front of the school banner.
  • Register to receive no-obligation commencement photo proofs and a 20% discount if you choose to purchase photos.
  • Questions can be directed to, or call (800) 261-2576, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. eastern time.

Step 5: MAY 14, 2021 - CLASS OF 2021 GRADUATES: Mandatory Practice

  • Petro Allied Health Center, 10:30-11:30 a.m., Lee Arena

Commencement Day — Saturday, May 15, 2021

If you or any of your guests have a Covid-19 symptom or meet any of the other conditions in the Policy for Reporting Covid-19 Issues, please do not participate in the Commencement ceremony. We want this to be a safe event for all attendees.

Commencement is a celebration to honor and recognize the achievements of all graduates. With respect to all, it is expected that graduates and their families and friends will remain for the entire ceremony. Commencement is expected to last approximately 90 minutes. Please make your plans accordingly.

Tickets are required (see Step 1 above). Pre-registration, masks, and distancing will be required of all graduates and their guests.

12:45 p.m.

  • Students arrive and will robe on the first floor of the Law School (details forthcoming). Maintain social distancing and wear your mask. Please have a family member or guest keep your personal belongings. A secure location is not available.
  • Faculty and platform party will robe in the Robing/Conference Room, Faculty Reading Room, and 2nd floor lobby of the Law School. Please do not leave any valuables in these rooms.
  • Assigned faculty and staff will assist with robing and other directions for the ceremony.

1:00-1:30 p.m.

Marshals will assist students with lining up for the procession.

Inclement weather: In case of inclement weather, an announcement will be made on the Law School website, an email will be sent to and and signs will be posted on the law school outside doors by 12:00 p.m., Saturday, May 15. If inclement weather occurs, graduates will meet in Petro room 125 and faculty will meet in Petro room 220.

1:30 p.m.

The procession leaves the Law School. It includes Grand Marshal Professor Jeffrey Jackson, the Kansas Territorial Pipes and Drums, members of the platform party, law school deans and faculty, and law school graduates (Class of 2020, then Class of 2021).

Families are welcome to stand as "honor guard" along the procession route and take photos/videos. Please observe social distancing between groups. The procession begins by exiting the law school, heads east to the northeast corner of Memorial Union, turns south then back east and goes past the south side of Morgan Hall, the north side of Carnegie Hall, the north side of Whiting Fieldhouse, and heads south to the southeast entrance to Petro Allied Health Center.

The procession will halt at the first floor northeast entrance to Lee Arena for 5 to 10 minutes, at approximately 1:50 p.m., to allow guests watching the procession to be seated.

Parking is available on the east side of campus close to Lee Arena and on the west side of campus near the law school and Memorial Union.

Commencement ends (Kansas Territorial Pipes and Drums will lead the platform party, faculty, and graduates to the parking lot east of Petro where guests can join them).
