Prior to coming to Washburn University School of Law Professor Smith was a Visiting Professor of Legal Writing at the Drake University and University of Connecticut schools of law. He has served as an Academic Support Professional at Atlanta's John Marshall Law School, where he shepharded an overhaul of the school's 1L academic support programming and assistance to increase the curriculum's emphasis on legal writing and overall rigor. At John Marshall he helped bring the school into compliance with ABA standards.

Professor Smith has also served as Assistant Professor and the Director of Academic Success at Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Duncan School of Law, where he provided programming and support to students throughout their legal education, and helped the school achieve full ABA accreditation in March of 2019. Prior to LMU, he was a Professor of Legal Writing and Director of Academic Success at Mississippi College School of Law. In his prior positions Professor Smith has taught Legal Writing, Employment Law, Agency Law, and first year legal foundations and upper level bar preparation courses.

Professor Smith's passion is for helping others succeed and achieve their goals. He instructs and challenges his students and fosters an environment of excellence in the classroom.
