Message from Dean Jackson

Hello, Washburn Law Alumni and Community,

Another exciting semester is underway here at the law school. Students are back on campus and eagerly awaiting spring to arrive. We have already had a few days of snow that blanketed campus and I think it’s safe to say everyone is welcoming the milder temperatures this week.

Speaking of this week, our annual Day of Giving is taking place this Thursday, Feb. 1. For nearly 10 years, the Washburn University Alumni Association and Foundation has brought people together to celebrate Washburn’s birthday with Day of Giving. This virtual event raises funds to enhance the student experience for every student who passes through Washburn’s campus.

This year, we are promoting three areas of support for the law school: the Dean’s Fund and Scholarships, the Summer Public Interest Stipends, and the Jim Concannon Deanship. You can learn more about each of these at https://washburngivingday.org/.

The Dean’s Fund for Excellence allows us to take advantage of opportunities and needs as they arise during a given year, such as student scholarships, program support, and student initiatives. Even though our beloved law school remains competitive with the costs associated at other institutions, the cost to obtain a law degree is often a huge burden for our students. Scholarships can be the difference between being able to attend law school or not.

The Summer Public Interest Stipends fund is also a great way to help our students. This fund helps by providing funds for qualifying students who work in unpaid public interest legal jobs during the summer months. Your gift to this fund will support current students performing vital public interest work and gaining valuable experience this summer.

And finally, a fund that is very near and dear to me, we are asking for support for the Jim Concannon Deanship. This will be the first named deanship at Washburn, named after longtime dean, professor, and my mentor, Jim Concannon. As you already know, Jim was the longest-serving dean in Washburn Law history. This named deanship is our way to ensure his legacy lives on. To date, generous alumni like you have given $2.3 million of the $3 million needed to endow the deanship.

I hope you will join me later this week by making a gift during Washburn’s annual Day of Giving. Again, you can learn more about these and other areas to support at https://washburngivingday.org/. Until then, if you have questions, please reach out to me. I fervently believe that this is your law school and I’m always eager to hear from you.

Sincerely,

Jeff
