Message from Dean Jackson

Hello, Washburn Law Alumni and Community,

Campus is buzzing with excitement once again as we welcome in a new academic year, the first in our brand-new home. We are incredibly excited to be working from the new Robert J. Dole Hall. The future continues to look bright for the Law School.

This week brought about the beginning of classes. There were 86 new students who walked through our doors to begin their legal education. As we look ahead to future class sizes, we are optimistic that enrollment will continue to grow with the selection of the new Assistant Dean for Admissions. Kaitlin Alegria has accepted the role and will assume responsibilities on Aug. 31. This name is already familiar to many of you - Kaitlin has invested the last six years of her career with the Washburn University Alumni Association and Foundation as a Director of Development. Her dedication was an asset in building relationships with our fellow alumni and we expect she will continue to work closely with you to recruit new law students. I hope you’ll join me in congratulating her on this new position.

Another part of ushering in a new school year includes our Welcome Back Bash. We invite our local alumni to join us on Sept. 8 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. to welcome students back. The Bash is co-sponsored by the Jessie Nye Society, the alumni affinity group named after Washburn’s first female law school graduate, and the event also offers an opportunity to see the new building if you weren’t able to join us back in July.

The Bash is also an opportunity to gather and remember one of our own. The loss of Jim Concannon is still felt acutely by the faculty, staff, and students who knew him and had the privilege of working with him. A memorial has been set up with the Foundation to continue to honor his legacy. If you would like to join us in honoring Professor Concannon’s legacy, visit wualumni.org/give to make a memorial gift to the James M. Concannon Dean and Professor of Law fund.

As we embark on the next chapter in Washburn Law history, I remain confident that we have cemented our place as a leader in legal education. I welcome you to reach out with any questions. I will always stand by my statement: this is your law school. I am always happy to hear from you.

Sincerely,

Jeff
